Hepatitis C infection may be combated with grapefruit compound

February 18th, 2008

Grapefruit compound, which gives grapefruit bitterish taste, slows down extension of hepatitis C infection in an organism, have established American scientists. In their opinion, the combination of this substance with traditional viricides can relieve disease and prevent chronic form of the disease, informs magazine Hepatology.

According to the head of the research Raymond Chung and his colleagues from Massachusetts hospitals, the main role belongs to nagenginin. Their experiments have shown that action of this derivative substance reduces production of the virus from infected cells by 80 %. It is also important, that medical concentration of this substance is not toxic for an organism, has noted Chung.

According to the statistics, more than 3 % of the planet’s population is infected with hepatitis C, and in overwhelming majority of cases illness passes to the chronic form. The chronic hepatitis C infection can lead to cirrhosis and liver carcinoma.

Scientists have offered to replace vaccination with tattooing

February 14th, 2008

Using of tattoo technique at vaccination can considerably increase efficiency of some vaccines, believe German scientists. On their data, vaccines injected into an organism by tattoo method, stimulate immune system much better, than usual vaccinations.

According to the researchers, vaccination with the help of tattooing leads to 16-fold increase in production of antibodies to papilloma virus. Such significant effect is connected to the big area of injection, and also with injuring influence of a needle and inflammatory reactions which additionally stimulate immune system, explain scientists.

The new method of tattoo-vaccination can increase efficiency of some DNA- vaccines which have appeared unable to cause required immune answer. However, because of duration and soreness of the procedure, they can hardly be used for preventive vaccination, especially at children.

Every six seconds tobacco takes a human life

February 13th, 2008

World Health Organization has published the annual report which says, that the illnesses connected to smoking, take a life of one person every six seconds, killing on the average 5,4 million people a year.

Smoking marihuana leads to loss of teeth

February 11th, 2008

Experts from stomatologic school Danedin in New Zealand have proved that often smoking marihuana three times increases risk of periodontitis.
In the research participated 900 young people, who were observed from 18 till 32 years. Scientists have also compared reports on drugs consumption by participants in the age of 18, 21, 26 and 32 years.

“Gum illnesses have been found at a quarter of people, who regularly used marihuana from 18 till 32 years - we have been struck with such significant increase in risk”, - declared head of the research Murray Thomson.

Periodontitis is a disease which leads to tooth destruction. 100 % of adult population of the Earth and 80 % of children have these or that signs of the disease, assert experts of the WHA.

It is necessary to note, that earlier American scientists came to a conclusion that CBD in marihuana structure, prevents cancer.

Sugary soft drinks increase risk of gout

February 6th, 2008

An increased consumption of sweet drinks is connected to substantial risk of gout in men. To such conclusions came authors of the scale long-term research which have covered more than 46 thousand participants. In scientists’ opinion, development of gout is promoted by fructose contained in sweet fizzy drinks.

In the past gout has frequently been called as illness of aristocrats, however now it becomes more and more spread among the widest layers of population. So, within the last several decades gout sickness rate in the USA has increased more than twice. Growth of sickness rate has coincided on time with sharp increase in consumption of sweet fizzy drinks.

The analysis of the received data has shown that the risk of gout development is directly connected to the frequency of sugary soft drinks consumption irrespective of weight of a body, alcohol consumption, age or diet. So, gout cases among the men drinking not less than two bottles soda water a day, were 85 % more often in comparison with those who drank it once a month. For those who daily drank not less than one portion of this soft drink, the additional risk of gout has made 45 %.

Broccoli protects from heart illnesses

February 4th, 2008

Steam-cooked broccoli improves heart work and reduces damages of myocardium in conditions of oxygen lack. To such conclusion came American scientists as a result of experiments on rats, informs Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

In researchers’ opinion, the protective effect of broccoli is explained by high content of some substances, which stimulate thioredoxin’s production. This albumin plays an important role in protection of cells in conditions of broken blood supply of heart muscle.

Protective action of broccoli is not limited to prevention of heart illnesses. Earlier researches have shown that this cabbage reduces probability of breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Accepting transplants without medicines

January 31st, 2008

Two independent teams of the American scientists have declared that they could relieve the patients after kidney transplantation of lifelong taking immunosuppressant. The report on these cases has been published in New England Journal of Medicine.

In the experiments carried out by scientists from Massachusetts hospital and the Harvard Medical School participated five persons, requiring kidney transplantation. Scientists have destroyed a part of patients’ marrow and by means of medicines have destroyed the immune cells, which play a key role in rejection of an alien organ. Then the participants received a marrow and a kidney taken from the same donor.

Two - five years later after transplantation four patients have normally functioning kidney and do not require immunity-inhibiting preparations.

Refusal to take immunosuppressants can considerably improve quality of patients’ life, however additional researches on the safety of a new method are indispensable, believe scientists.

During physical examination it was found out that almost all leukocytes has a male genotype.

In opinion of doctors from the Sydney children’s hospital Westmid, it can be explained by action of stem blood cells, in a small amount containing in a donor liver, which have completely replaced own hemopoietic cells of a marrow. It is supposed, that this could be promoted by a virus infection, which has weakened own immunity of the girl right after the surgery.
