Transition to winter time is not so harmless

October 31st, 2007

Transition to winter time is perceived by many as an opportunity to spend in beds one more hour.

However experts say that putting a clock one hour back is not so harmless for an organism.

Even such insignificant change of the schedule, in opinion of Nile Stanley - the expert from hospital of the English county Norfolk, can break the habitual schedule of sleep and wake and to lead to exhaustion. According to the scientist, to adapt completely to the new time a person may need about three days.

To struggle with negative consequences of putting a clock back, the expert advises to change the schedule gradually, allowing time for relaxing that allows then to fall asleep better.

However, according to experts, this advice is followed only by 40 % of the British. The others consider that putting a clock back can hardly affect their state of health and prefer not to change the habitual schedule of life essentially.

Turks have created the medicine stopping any bleeding

October 30th, 2007

Turkish scientists for the first time in the world have created a medicine which stops any bleeding within several minutes.

The medication, which becomes irreplaceable means for treatment of hemophilia, also became the first local medicine, licensed by Turkish Ministry of Health.

The unique medicine is created on the basis of a mix of various plants: nettles, licorice, thyme, and grapevine. It, as it is informed, can be applied for treatment of other serious illnesses, in particular diabetes.

The recipe of medication for hemophilia Turkish physicians have developed on the basis of the ancient formula. They are going to tell in detail about the opening in British medical magazine International British Journal.

Scientists have learned to “grow eyes

October 29th, 2007

The group of British scientists has declared to have found a way to create eyes and their separate elements under laboratory conditions, informs Science Centric.

During the scientifically set experiment, researchers used 8-cellular frog embryo into which they have added the molecules named ectoenzymes (usually located on an external membrane of various cells).

Scientists have taken only three ectoenzyme molecules, trying to find out how each of them splits adenosine triphosphate, nucleotide which serves as an accumulator and energy carrier.

As a result of experiment scientists have found out that one ectoenzyme named E-NTPDase2, quickly transforming adenosine triphosphate in adenosine diphosphate (ADP), influences development of tadpole’s eyes. And if to inject ectoenzyme into cells of a germ, it forms an eye. But what is the most interesting – an eye can be formed not only in area of a head, but also in other parts, for example, in area of a belly and even a tail.

The list of most depressive professions

October 26th, 2007

Employees of the American Department of narcological and psychiatric services have studied interconnection between professional work and risk of depression and made a rating of the most depressive professions, informs The Washington Post.

During the research experts considered data of the National Survey of Drug Use and Health in which took part more than 60 thousand working people in the age from 18 till 64 years.

As it appeared, the greatest number of people which suffer from depression worked in sphere of elderly and sick people care. Also this category included the nurses who were looking after small children. Almost 11 % of people working in this sphere, annually suffer from depression for two and more weeks.

The second occupied workers of public catering - waiters, cooks and barmen, as approximately 10,3 % from them have been subject to bad mood which was accompanied by sleep disturbances, loss of appetite and impairment of attention concentration.

The third place took the workers of social sphere and public health services - about 9,6 % from them suffered from depression.

Take care of healthy food to prevent cancer

October 25th, 2007

Many people like to eat tasty and nourishing, but the main thing is not to do much harm. The vegetable food can help to avoid, and, probably, to overcome such enemy, as a cancer.

Experts from University of Manitoba have conducted the research and found out that treatment of this illness will be more successful at presence of the certain substances in an organism. Anticancer medicines, which contain metomicin in their structure, bring result provided that there is an enzyme coded NQ01 in the organism. But enzyme NQ01 will not be secreted, if there is no dimethylfumarat in the organism. It is necessary to notice, that almost all vegetative cells have this very dimethylfumarat. So, as it appeared, sometimes to eat vegetables and fruits will be useful not only to be in good form, but also to prevent oncological diseases.

The microrobot for arteries and veins cleansing

October 24th, 2007

The group of scientists from the South-Korean University Honnam has managed to create the microscopic robot which can clear walls of arteries and veins of the person.

The robot is a small crab with six paws. Such structure of a body allows it to move free on a channel of a person’s vessel with a speed of 55 meters in a week.

Experts inform that the robot gets in a vessel of the person through a usual injection. It feeds on the energy from sugar chemical processing contained in blood of the person, that provides its full autonomy.

The robot is well trained by experts and if, for example, it meets atheromatosis plaque inside a vessel, it starts to secrete chemical substance which will dissolve pathological formation and will help to restore a lumen of an artery and strengthen its walls.

There is also a minus of the given invention - experts have not thought up how to deceive the immune system of the patient, which can perceive the robot as an alien body and destroy it before it will start to carry out its medical function.

Czechs have patented biologically active bandage

October 23rd, 2007

Research center “Nanomedik” has received the patent for manufacture of the bandage named “clever”.

Biologically active bandage will help with treatment of deep wounds, cartilages, regeneration of skin and bone tissues.

Medical bandages are created on a basis of nanotechnology, is said in the report of Radio “Prague”.

According to representative of “Nanomedik” Susan Pekarkova, treatment will be conducted by means of local chemical reactions stimulation at a molecular level.

Fifteen private companies and six scientific institutes took part in the work above creation of new medical bandages.

Stress at work leads to a cancer

October 22nd, 2007

Women, who experience stress at work, have bigger chances to be taken ill with breast cancer, - have found out scientists. If work morally exhausts, the risk of this illness raises by 30 percents.

Results of this research, which covers 36 thousand women, deny the previous researches, which have not revealed connection between stress and breast cancer, informs Daily Mail.

Annually 44 thousand women are diagnosed with “breast cancer”. 12 thousand die from this disease every year. Though death rate from it is reduced, the number of fallen ill constantly grows. The reasons are an unhealthy mode of life, poor ecology, alcoholism, refusal to breast-feed and late delivery.

The new research, which will be published in the nearest number of Epidemiology magazine, is focused on stress.

The reason, why stress can increase risk of cancer, is not clear meanwhile. The previous researches say about possible increase of estrogen which can provoke cancer. Other theory is in that that the stress changes behavior of women, forcing them to lead a wrong way of life, to smoke and so on.

Meantime, the earlier Denmark examination of 7 thousand women, which lasted for 18 years, has shown an opposite results: the women, who experience a lot of stress, more rarely are ill with breast cancer.

Scientists have found out, lack of what vitamins worsens the sight

October 18th, 2007

Scientists from medical college of Georgia have shown negative action of a high amino acid level on blood vessels and cells of a retina, and have found out lack of what vitamins worsens sight.

During the research experts have revealed negative influence of homocyctin amino acid on sight. And scientists mark, that the level of this amino acid rises in blood when falls concentration of the folic and ascorbic acids, arising at lack of consumption of these vitamins - B9 and C.

For the proof of the theory cellular biologist Silvia Smith has conducted an experiment on mice.

The medicine for a headache helps in struggle with alcoholism

October 17th, 2007

Preparation Topamax widely used as means from a migraine and epilepsy, can help with alcoholism treatment, is said in the results of the researches published in Journal of the American Medical Association.

371 patients with alcoholic dependence have participated in an experiment. Researches have shown that taking of the drug in the beginning of hard drinking reduces both duration of it, and amount of daily used alcoholic drinks.

The basic side-effects from use of the given drug are abnormality of attention, unpleasant feelings on a skin and change of taste.

At the same time scientists do not reveal the mechanism of drug’s action and are not sure yet in the most effective way of its application.
