Discussion of problems with friends leads to depression

August 14th, 2007

Scientists have revealed that detailed discussion of problems with friends raises risk of anxiety and depression at girls and teenagers. Most likely the same concerns adult people.
Research lasted for six months, 813 children and teenagers took part in it. Girls who discussed problems with friends more often had symptoms of depression and anxiety, than those did not devote much time to conversations about their problems.
Scientists assume that endless “chewing” of routine problems leads to constant feeling of alarms and hopelessness. Besides the girls devoting to too much time to discussion of their difficulties, have not enough time for more useful pastime which could cheer them up.
“It is wonderful to have an opportunity to tell about the problems, but in this occupation moderation is needed”, - says the author of the research Amanda Roz (Missouri University, Columbia, the USA).
It is interesting, that the boys who discussed the problems with friends, considered their friendship more strong, but, as against to girls, were not exposed to risk of emotional disorders. Psychologists assume that girls, in comparison with boys, are more inclined to take another’s problems to heart.

The belief about female garrulity and man’s briefness has been blown sky-high

August 10th, 2007

The public opinion says that women speak much more than men. The group of scientists headed by Matthias R. Mehl (University of Arizona, the USA) has decided to check this fact.
For about 6 years researchers recorded everyday conversations of 400 Mexican and American students both sexes. During the research young men and girls carried special digital dictaphones which recorded all conversations.
Here are results of the research: women said on the average 16215 words during a day, men - 15669 words. Thus, the difference is, but it is not so significant, as many assume.
Author of the work pays attention that the amount of the words in greater degree depends on the character of the person, rather than on the sex. «What does mean difference in 500 words, in comparison with a difference in 45000 words, between the most talkative and most reticent people participating in the research? One of them said 47000 words during a day, another one - only 500», - tells Matthias R. Mehl.
«The belief about female garrulity and man’s briefness has no basis», - conclude authors of the work.

Morning sickness - a good sign

August 8th, 2007

It looks as, the women suffering from morning sickness can be happy even if they don’t think so. These women have 30 % lower risk of breast cancer development during all life, in comparison with those who didn’t feel sickness during pregnancy at all. To such conclusion came scientists of Buffalo University (USA).
The exact mechanism of morning sickness during pregnancy is unknown; it is considered, that this phenomenon is connected to change of placental hormones level and ovary hormones. In particular, the important role plays increase of chorionic gonadotropin level in blood. In vitro this hormone has shown powerful anticarcinogenic properties.
David Jaworowicz and his colleagues have analyzed the data on participants of the scale research “Western New York Exposure and Breast Cancer Study. They have compared the information about pregnancies of the women who later were fallen ill and do fallen ill with breast cancer.
Other conditions connected to pregnancy statistically did not influence significantly risk of breast cancer in the future.

Scientists: hair-dye can cause cancer

August 8th, 2007

American scientists have conducted research and found out that men and women, who constantly dyed hair till 1980, are exposed to the greater risk to be ill of leucosis, than those who did not do it.
The head of the researches Gurth Roshe informed that the hair-dye for a long time has been in the list of potentially dangerous carcinogenic substances and numerous researches of its structure constantly gave inconsistent results.
But this time they have managed to establish, that dangerous are only old formulas of dyes, which contain carcinogenic components. And dyes created after 1980 are quite safe for the health.
During the research experts compared 769 patients with acute leukemia and 623 healthy persons. In result scientists found out that those who dyed hair from one to five times during 15 years had twice higher risk of leucosis development, than those from the control group.
Scientists mark, that though use of out-of-date dyes is dangerous to health, this is not obligatory factor of leucosis development. Therefore there is no need to refuse opportunity to change the image.

Printers threaten health of office workers

August 3rd, 2007

The Australian researchers headed by professor Lydia Moravska, ILAQH director, have casually found out, that printers let out plenty of tiny particles which potentially can negatively influence respiratory apparatus, cardiovascular system and even to cause cancer.
Particles have been fixed, when scientists checked efficiency of ventilation in protection of employees against air pollutions. It was meant, that the dirty gets from the street: “We really did not expect to find something from internal sources of pollution, but soon found out, that internal sources are much more dangerous than external”, - said Moravska.
When it was found out that printers let out some particles, researchers have studied 62 printers, and 17 from them have been recognized as “emitters”. And one printer let out particles in the amount comparable to “emission” of the smoking cigarette. However, 37 printers appeared absolutely safe.
Scientists inform that the greatest amount of particles is let out by printers with the new cartridge.
Meanwhile, the further researches are needed, as scientists do not know the chemical structure of particles and don’t understand how they get into air.

Scientists have revealed left-handedness’ gene

August 2nd, 2007

Experts from Oxford University as a result of a long research have managed to reveal a gene which is responsible for left-handedness.
Scientists have found out, that gene LRRTM1 plays a key role in distribution of functions of various parts of a brain.
It is known that the brain is asymmetric. At right-handed persons the left hemisphere controls speech and knowledge of languages, and right – is responsible for emotions. And lefthanders have everything vice versa. And experts assume that gene LRRTM1 is the reason to that.
Besides these functions the revealed gene, according to the experts, can increase probability of schizophrenia development.
So scientists, headed by doctor Clyde Franks from the Center of human genetics of the Oxford University, plan to study influence of this gene on the further development of a brain. According to the statistics, about 10% of the Earth population are lefthanders.
At the same time Franks has noted that lefthanders should not worry about schizophrenia. “There is a set of the factors increasing probability of schizophrenia development, and the majority of lefthanders have never had such problems”, - explained he has.

Alcohol increases colorectal cancer risk by 10 %

August 1st, 2007

The British scientists after the conducted research have declared that people who drink half-liter of beer or the big glass of wine daily have 10 % higher risk of colorectal cancer.
The research headed by Professor Tim Key, deputy head of the cancer epidemiological research group in the Oxford University, has summarized the data of almost 480 thousand people.
Scientists have found out quantity of alcohol and frequency of drinking within the last six years. It was discovered that people, who used more than 30 g of alcohol daily that corresponds to liter of a strong beer, raise risk of disease approximately by 25 %.
Doctor Lesley Walker from Cancer Research UK considers what now its is difficult to determine safe for health quantity of alcohol, as there are a set of different brands of strong beer and wine.
