The season of a birth influences future eyesight of the child

August 31st, 2007

Children who have been given birth in the winter have smaller chances to become short-sighted during the life, and better eyesight than those who were born in the summer, informed in press release of the Tel Aviv university.
During one of the most scale ophthalmologic researches in the world, headed by the senior ophthalmologist of Israeli armed forces Jossy Mandel, scientists have studied data on 300000 Israelis in the age of from 16 to 23 years.
Scientists tried to find connection between month of a child’s birth and chances of short-sightedness development in the further and received rather convincing results. As it appeared, children who were born in June and July, run 24 % more risk of heavy short-sightedness than those given birth in December and January. According to researchers, it is fair for children from any country of the world.
This regularity can be explained by the remote consequences of sunlight effect on the child in the beginning of his or her life, makes comments on the received data Michael Belkin from Institute of eye research at Tel Aviv university.

WHO: the Earth under the threat of global epidemics

August 29th, 2007

Infectious diseases spread faster, than ever on the planet and threat of global epidemics becomes more and more real. Such information was published in the annual report of the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to WHO’s information, since 1970th 39 new diseases have appeared in the world and for the last five years more than 1100 eruptions has been registered, including cholera, poliomyelitis and avian flu.
Experts also mark that the probability of new pandemia development and distribution increases because of the global passenger air passenger traffic: annually about 2,1 billion person make flights.
“It would be extremely naive and precipitate to believe that there will be no more diseases similar to AIDS or SARS”, - is spoken in the report. Therefore WHO calls all countries of the world for cooperation in struggle against epidemics.
World Health Organization urgently asks not conceal the information on outbreak of diseases, and also to exchange the data on new viruses and means of struggle against them. Otherwise, new pandemia can become threat not only for people lives, but also for economic and political stability.

Scientists have described the future of the one human race

August 28th, 2007

Genetics and anthropologists have put forward a number of hypotheses, according to which people of the future will evolve in one race of the beautiful swarthy giants who have lost social skills, because of technical progress.
National Geographic has written the assumption that all red-haired people will disappear on the Earth by 2060.
According to scientists-geneticist, now only 2 % of the Earth’s population have a gene responsible for red color of hair. Thus as a result of outmarriages there is a quick reduction of number of its carriers. Red color of hair has appeared in Northern Europe about thousand years ago over the mutation of a special gene. Scientists consider that the reason of such mutation was an attempt of a body to provide vitamin D synthesis in conditions of sunny days’ lack.
It is interesting that in opinion of scientists, in the nearest 100 thousand years the mankind can be divided into two subspecies (by a social principle). “Elite” descendants will be high, slim, healthy, beautiful and creative. People of the “lowest” class will turn in the stupid, ugly, stocky creatures like goblins. These two classes will differ sharply from each other.
Also there is an assumption, that in the nearest one thousand years people can turn to swarthy giants from 70 inches up to 83 inches. And life interval will increase to120 years.

Scientists discovered fever center in a brain

August 27th, 2007

Scientists from the Medical center Beth Israel Deaconess have revealed the part of a brain responsible for rise of body temperature. Selective blocking of this center located in hypothalamus, can become a basis for creation of specific antifebriles, informs Nature Neuroscience.
Earlier scientists know, that the inflammation is accompanied by secretion of biologically active substance - prostaglandin Е2. This compound influences hypothalamus - part of a brain responsible for vegetative regulation of body temperature, appetite, water balance, sexual activity, a vascular tone, etc.
Clifford Saper and his colleagues have aimed to establish the specificsite of hypothalamus, responsible for rise of body temperature. Experiments were run on mice.
According to the scientist, finally they have managed to find “pin-headâ€? part of the brain, and “switching off” its EP3-receptors blocked development of the fever. The area playing a key role in rise of body temperature appeared the medial preoptic nucleus located in a median zone of hypothalamus.
«We assume, that in a human brain all happens precisely the same way», - declared Saper.
The antifebriles used now (for example, aspirin), influence all prostaglandin receptors in an organism – that is why there are a lot of side-effects. The new data allow to begin development of more safe preparations influencing specific receptors, the summarized scientist.

Scientists: Adiposity can be caught as a common cold

August 24th, 2007

The group of scientists at the annual assembly of the American chemical society has confirmed the information that adiposity can be really caught as a common cold.
The Guardian writes that well-known adenovirus-36 which causes respiratory and eye diseases, can also transform stem cells into depot fat. Besides, this virus contains a gene which is responsible for this transformation.
Results of the research conducted by the American experts show, that the reason of adiposity is not only in an inactive way of life and high-calorie food. “We do not confirm, that a virus is the only reason of adiposity, but research has shown, that in some cases adiposity is caused by a virus infection”, - declared Magdalena Pasareeka, Professor of Louisiana University.
It is necessary to note, that Ad-36 virus has already been connected with human adiposity. Though, experts mark, that it is not the only one which leads to similar side-effects.

In New Zealand appeared poisonous Chinese pajamas

August 23rd, 2007

Authorities of New Zealand have declared that the children’s pajamas delivered from China, contain a dangerous doze of formaldehyde, which in 900 times exceeds the norm.
According to the British newspaper The Financial Times, manufacturers from time to time add formaldehyde in clothes, but it can cause a rash, irritation in eyes and in a throat, and also allergic reactions.
One of New Zealand shops has decided to check up quality of the Chinese pajamas, and it appeared that children’s pajamas can cause serious damage to the health. In this connection, for the first time the similar investigation has called into question safety of clothes from China.
The head of the Chinese monitoring service Li Changdjan has denied all charges and declared that some governments consciously abase Chinese goods, being afraid of the growing volume of export from China. But the head of EU trading committee Peter Mendelson has answered that the given assumptions are completely groundless and that the question is about safety only.

Blue-eyed people - the cleverest people on the Earth

August 22nd, 2007

The group of the American scientists has conducted a research and proved, that people with blue eyes are much more claver than those who were given birth with more dark color of eyes, informs Maariv newspaper.

Experts have established, what even irrespective of the sex, blue-eyed natures are much more gifted than dark-eyed ones, and also achieve the bigger successes in the academic training than others.

Also representatives of blue eyes play golf better and have much more advanced strategic thinking.
Professor Joanna Rob from University of Lowill, the head of the researches has declared that experts cannot give exact explanation to the given phenomenon for the present time; however they are precisely sure in its reliability.

Most efficiently the brain works in silence

August 21st, 2007

Researchers from the Stanford University have carried out research of work of the brain getting the information from the continuous stream from an external world.
Scientists played fragments from pieces of music of XVIII century which contained some precise intervals between rather short parts.
Ten men and eight women listened to the music in headphones, thus their brain was scanned with the help of magnetic resonance tomography.
Scientists have found out that music switches on parts of the brain connected with attention and forecasting. The brain divided the information into important parts, taking the information about the beginning, the ending and borders between them.
Intervals between musical parts appeared perfect conditions for studying dynamically varying activity of the brain. The peak of brain activity has fallen to the short period of silence between musical fragments.

Alcohol is salutary for the heart

August 20th, 2007

The research conducted by the Israeli scientists has shown that alcohol has salutary influence on two types of cholesterol, raising their positive influence on cardiovascular system and reducing negative one.
Physicians have long ago established that moderate consumption of alcohol promotes normalization of cardiac function.
HDL (High-density lipoprotein) cholesterol observed at moderately drinking people, scientific named “good” - lipoproteins in this kind of cholesterol normalize work of heart and prevent heart attacks. LDL (Low density lipoprotein) cholesterol is considered “bad” as it blocks blood vessels and leads to formation of blood clots.
The new research which has been conducted in Israel, has allowed to look anew at a role of alcohol in cholesterol formation and it influence on health. As it appeared moderate consumption of alcohol promotes formation of the big lipoprotein particles in both HDL, and LDL cholesterol.
According to Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, particles of HDL cholesterol of the larger, than usual size, stimulate cardiac function more effectively, and negative influence of big LDL cholesterol particles is reduced. In that case when the number of big LDL cholesterol particles exceeds number of small particles of LDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol as a whole becomes a positive regulator of cardiac function.

Scientists: shyness reduces lifetime

August 16th, 2007

Scientists from American Northwestern University in Chicago conducted 30-years researches and have proved, that timidity and shyness, reduce lifetime and cause cardiovascular diseases.
It is necessary to note, that objects of the study were men exclusively. So it has been established, that timid men are twice more often exposed to heart attacks and insults, than their coevals without complexes.
Thus as appeared, even such factors as meal peculiarities, smoking and excessive weight have no appreciable influence on this phenomenon.
“Everything witness to that, that shy people should change their way of life immediately: they should more often meet with their friends, go to theatres, cafes, restaurants and dance halls”, - declared one of the scientists.
At the same time scientists cannot explain for a while why socially more active people are less often ill with dangerous to life cardiovascular diseases.
