Soliloquy is a remedy for stresses

July 16th, 2007

The research conducted at the University of California has shown, that it is not important whom you speak to - a friend, a concrete wall or the imagined interlocutor. Both that, and another helps a human brain to cope with a crisis situation.
According to scientists, putting into words anger, annoyance and disappointment calms brain’s sector which is responsible for emotional shocks. Bluntly speaking, conversation reduces work of the sector responsible for a panic and fear, making active the area responsible for the control over emotions. This process allows the person to calm down and cope with negative feelings.
Within the framework of an experiment scientists have connected to brain scanners 18 women and 12 men in the age from 18 till 36 years. The volunteers have been shown photos with the faces reflecting various emotions - such as anger and fear - and have been asked to describe these feelings.
Research has shown, that at that moment when the person uses words “malicious and “angry to the face reflecting these emotions - scanners show decrease in reaction in amigdalin sector, the part of a brain responsible for emotions and feelings.

Scientists have found out «a gene of asthma»

July 13th, 2007

The international group of researchers from the USA, Great Britain, France and Germany identified the gene connected to the increased probability of children’s bronchial asthma development.
The gene named ORMDL3 located in 17-th chromosome was revealed by employees of Michigan University during the research of genotypes of 2237 children, 994 from which suffered asthma. According to the scientists, presence of the certain variant of this gene is connected to increased risk of disease development by 60-70 %.
The data of the American scientists have been confirmed during the additional genetic researches with participation of 2000 children from Germany and 3000 adult asthmatics from the Great Britain.
Researchers believe that their opening sooner or later will lead to development of a new treatment tactics of this heavy chronic disease. According to one of research organizers, professor from the National Institute of heart and lungs (USA) William Cookson, the discovered gene is the most serious of asthma development hereditary risk factors known now.

Sausages and hamburgers can cause cancer because of the dye

July 12th, 2007

The widespread food dye which is added in sausages and hamburgers, can lead to a cancer. About it informed the European agency on food safety.
The headquarters of the Agency is located in the Italian city of Parma. There they informed the name of the dye: Red 2G, on grocery packings it is marked as E 128.
The tests on animals have shown, that Red 2G in an organism transforms to aniline. This substance can cause cancer in animals and the person, and also to generate genetic changes in cells of an organism.
The scientific council of the European agency on food safety cancelled existing till now norms, which determined safe Red 2G’s concentration in food stuffs. At that the Agency has refrained from an appeal to ban completely this substance in the food-processing industry.
The agency has acquainted the European Commission with the conclusions. According to experts, the question on Red 2G ban will be solved by Eurocommission and by the national governments of the countries.

Stem cells are received from unfertilized ovules of a human being

July 10th, 2007

Russian and American scientists managed to receive the cells similar on their properties to stem cells of embryos, from unfertilized ovules of a human being.
Researchers from the Moscow Center of obstetrics, gynecology and perinatology of the Russian Academy of Medical Science and corporations Lifeline Cell Technology managed to bring up 6 lines of stem cells from blastocysts, formed as a result of donor ovules division, unfertilized by spermatozoons. The received cells possess morphological and biochemical properties of stem cells of a usual human embryos and a normal double set of chromosomes (23 pairs).
Analysis of stem cells’ DNA has confirmed their tissue compatibility with an organism of women - donors. It means that it is possible to implant such cells to the parent ovules’ donor in the therapeutic purposes without risk of graft rejection. Stem cells received from the usual embryos have unique genotype and consequently can be rejected by the immune system of the patient.
Earlier scientists managed to receive stem cells from mice’s and monkeys’ unfertilized ovules, however similar experiments with human tissues until recently have no results.

Scientists: On the days off impossible to have one’s sleep out

July 9th, 2007

The American scientists from Northwest University during the session of the USA National Academy of Sciences informed, that it is impossible to have one’s sleep out, sleeping off on the days off.
Scientists also have told about the results of the research. In the research experts used experimental rats, which were forced not to get enough sleep some days in a row. As a result, they stopped to want sleep, even, despite of an increasing sleep shortage.
Therefore researchers have drawn a conclusion, that as a result of chronic sleep shortage the mechanism of nervous system recovery during the sleep stops its work. Besides such people do not want to sleep, and this is very dangerous, as they do not feel necessity for a sleep.
As a result of chronic not getting enough sleep people became less efficient, put on the weight, became irritable, suffer from hallucinations and heart diseases. One more problem - cells of a brain loose their ability to restoration that leads to heavy mental disorders.
Experts inform that since 1960 average sleep duration has decreased from eight to six hours a day.

Spirit destroys metastasises

July 6th, 2007

Transdermal introduction of ethyl alcohol in metastases thyroid gland cancer in bone tissue can be used as the additional therapeutic procedure promoting the reduction of tumor size and painful syndrome relieve.
Thyroid gland cancer is rather widespread malignant disease. Usually tumors are removed in the surgical way and then hormonal therapy is carried out.
The forecast of cancer treatment is usually enough favorable; however metastases in bone tissue are not always possible to remove in the surgical way, besides they are frequently resistant to radioactive iodine treatment.
The Japanese researchers from university of Hokkaido, headed by Professor Kunihiro Nakada, have suggested to use in such cases as additional therapy introduction of pure ethanol, which induces cells. Authors consider, that introduction of ethanol in a tumor leads to selective destruction of a tumorous tissue.
Nakada says that to introduce the method in clinical practice it is necessary to optimize, including determining of an optimum dosage of ethanol and amount of injections.

Belgians are advised to try nonexpendable cigarettes

July 5th, 2007

Belgiam scientists have presented safe for people nonexpendable cigarette with the lowered nicotine maintenance. The smoke from it is harmless to associates. This week the novelty will appear on counters of shops and drugstores.
The novelty has been developed by the Belgian scientists in cooperation with the European experts and then has passed tests in laboratories of Catholic university of the Belgian city Levena.
Tobacco in an unusual cigarette is replaced with the special liquid filled in 4 replaceable mouthpieces which are included into the unit of “miracle - cigarette”. Replacing them, the smoker can adjust the concentration of nicotine. Thus exhaled air does not contain cancerogenic substances and is harmless both for associates, and for the smoker, assert manufacturers.
Scientists hope, that the novelty will be more effective than the existing means of struggle against nicotinic dependence. The part of the smoking population in Belgium makes 28 %. And half smoking assert, that would like to give up this addiction.

German scientists have developed fundamentally new tactics of struggle against HIV

July 4th, 2007

It is informed, that German scientists have developed and successfully tested fundamentally new tactics of struggle against HIV. Synthesized by them enzyme is able to reveal and destroy genes of the virus been built - in the DNA of infected cells.
Modern anti-retroviral therapy prevents HIV multiplication, but cannot destroy it completely. Other, more remote prospects are connected to development of preparations and vaccines blocking penetration of virus particles in a cell.
Destruction of a virus in cells already seized by it until recently considered an unrealizable task.
Synthesized by German researchers from Dresden Max Planck institute and Hamburg Institute of experimental virology and immunology enzyme named Tre-recombinase is able to identify a number of HIV - 1 genes in DNA of the infected cells and to modify them in such a manner that creation of new copies of a virus becomes impossible. Laboratory experiments have shown, that enzyme completely clears the infected HIV culture of human cells within three months.

New York inhabitants give up smoking because of social advertising

July 3rd, 2007

Social advertising has significantly reduced the numbers of smokers in New York for the last three years, states Daily News newspaper referring to the information of experts.
The main hero of antitobacco TV advertising clips became the man with moved off part of a throat because of a cancer. Inveterate smoker in the past now can take the meal only through an aperture in a throat that he shows to the audience.
By the way, antitobacco advertising campaign took about 10 million dollars from the city treasury.
Experts believe, that this very clip became the clincher when choosing whether smoke or not, instead of tax pressure upon cigarettes manufacturers and growth of the price on tobacco production.
New York also became the first city in the USA where authorities several years ago put restriction on smoking in restaurants, despite of negative reaction on the part of owners of the restaurant business.

Artificial skin passed successful tests

July 1st, 2007

The British biotechnological company Intercytex which has developed an artificial skin, has declared successful end of clinical tests early phase. The piece of a skin called ICX-SKN, transplanted to healthy volunteers, has provided healing of small wounds within 28 days.
ICX-SKN is created on the basis of fibrin (albumen of blood coagulative systems) and fibroblasts (the cells included in a skin of a person). At connection of these components cells start to develop collagen - the albumen which makes the fibrous basis steadier. This process reproduces the natural process of wounds healing in an organism of the person. In such stable form the artificial skin is implanted into an area of damage.
6 healthy volunteers have taken part in ICX-SKN’s testing. The piece of an artificial skin created in laboratory was placed on the shoulder by means of special sterile bands.
After four weeks bandages were removed. For this time wounds have completely skinned over with small scars, informed the head of research Paul Kemp. As he said, the subsequent laboratory research revealed no essential differences between samples of a “old” and “new” skin.
