Canadian surgeons found out green blood

June 13th, 2007

During a common operation surgeons of Vancouver city have faced rather strange phenomenon: the patient had very strange color of blood. Instead of common red one, doctors have seen a liquid of dark green color.
The 42-years confirmed smoker, whose name remained unknown, had problems with blood circulation in a leg and in this connection had to be operated.
“During the operation blood appeared to be not red, but dark green, almost black, reminding the color of an avocado peel. We have been very much amazed”, - told the surgeon.
Strange liquid was immediately sent on the analysis which revealed sulfohemoglobinemia - a condition caused by connection of sulfur atom to hemoglobin which is a carrier of oxygen in red blood cells - erythrocytes. Chemical reaction has changed the structure of hemoglobin therefore the color of blood has changed also.
It appeared that the patient took too much preparation called Sumatriptan, headache-lowering drug. The reactant of this preparation could become a source of sulfur in blood of the Canadian.
However despite of strange chemical reaction in the organism, the patient has perfectly underwent an operation and quickly recovered. The patient stopped to take the medicine, and some weeks later his blood again found natural color.

Birth weight tells about the future of a child

June 12th, 2007

Scientists from Michigan University have conducted a research and came to an amazing conclusion - the future of the person directly depends on his birth weight.
Experts found out, that the low-birth-weight infants (less than 5.51 lbs), have 30 % less chances in the childhood to have good or excellent health. In most cases this problem even is aggravated eventually - chances for bad health at a mature age for them increase by 70 %. And as result, state of health of such people by 30-40 years corresponds to a state of normal ones (those who had normal birth weight) which are 12 years elder.
Scientists add that such children in junior school make worse progress in mathematics, reading and other basic subjects. Such children have also lower chances to graduate from a school.
Scientists explain this paradox in the fallowing way: low-birth-weight infants come into the world more often in poor families. This has its impact not only on health of the child, but also on quality of its meal, education and development.

The best means against caries - chocolate paste

June 11th, 2007

The cocoa powder which is contained in many sweets, pastry and other products, can protect teeth from caries. Experts assure what this very substance can replace fluoride which is contained in tooth-pastes.
As they said, the white transparent powder received from cocoa helps to strengthen teeth enamel and protects them from caries.
Scientists have conducted a number of experiments with samples of tooth-paste with cocoa additives, which have shown, that it protects a surface of teeth enamel not worse, than paste with fluorine ions.
For the time being efficiency of this innovative paste has been proved only in tests on animals. To prove that the product is suitable for people, scientists will need from two to four years of researches.

Usual cigarettes will be forbidden in Europe

June 8th, 2007

The European Commission is going by 2009-2010 to forbid traditional cigarettes in all territory of the EU and replace them with the tobacco products, which go out, if are not smoked.
Secret of such cigarettes is in two or three stripes from non- porous paper, some kind of “lying policemen”: when fire reaches these stripes, it needs a smoker to get through them. And if there isn’t such person nearby, the cigarette goes out approximately in 2 minutes.
“This is very good news. Such innovation will rescue lives, - declared the British member of European Parliament Arlene McCarty. - It happens often, that people come home, drink and fall asleep on a sofa with a cigarette in a hand, and further you know - the fire begins. Safely burning cigarettes will considerably lower risk of such incidents”.

Chinese tooth-paste can be dangerous to health

June 6th, 2007

The American government has called USA citizens not to buy a tooth-paste made in China as it may contain dangerous chemical which is used in manufacture of antifreeze as well.
USA Food and Drug Administration has declared, that Chinese tooth-paste can contain diethyleneglycol.
This substance is widely applied in the industry, including as a solvent of nitrocellulose, oils and pitches. It may be also used as a cheaper alternative to glycerin – the substance which is added in a number of medical preparations.
However many experts consider, that diethyleneglycol is extremely dangerous to the human health. Last year its presence in syrup for cough and other medicines became the reason of death of at least 50 people in Panama.
According to FDA information, in the USA this dangerous Chinese paste can be bought in shops where all goods are sold for very low prices.
China has named the appeal to dissuade consumers to buy Chinese tooth-paste “unscientific, irresponsible and inconsistent”.
Chinese authorities assert that the amount of the chemical contained in a tooth-paste, has been determined safe to the health.

Sea water instead of medicines

June 5th, 2007

The Nicaraguan doctors conducted researches which have shown, that sea water can be successfully used as medicines for various illnesses. Physicians have told about it in the report during the World forum on water problems in Mexico. Such conclusion was made on the basis of the observation in the leading clinics over five thousand patients who underwent for two years medical treatment by means of sea water.
Results of the received data show, that two - three glasses of sea water in a day improve state of health of the patients suffering from the hypertension, an allergy, a diabetes and some other diseases. Water possesses properties of an analgesic, an antibiotic, protects from inflammatory processes and even can appease one’s hunger. The Spanish and Colombian scientists have confirmed, that on the structure sea water is similar to the human plasma, and contains a number of the elements useful to the human organism.

9 gene influences cardiac diseases

June 1st, 2007

Two independent groups of researchers from Canada and Iceland have found out three widespread genetic mutations, which considerably raise the risk of cardiovascular diseases at white Europeans and Americans.
During one of the researches experts of University of Ottawa (Canada) have analyzed samples of blood of 28 thousand patients with cardiovascular diseases, and healthy people who have made the control group. In result two mononucleotide mutations of genes of the 9-th chromosomes pair have been found, which sick participants have much more often.
According to the researchers, these genes are rather often met: more than half of Europeans are carriers of one copy of one of them, and a quarter have them in both chromosomes of 9-th pair.
At the same time the employee of University of Sheffield Tim Chico marks, that, in spite the great value of the information received by researchers, as a whole, the risk of cardiovascular diseases is determined not so much by genes, but by many factors of an environment: smoking, meal, an inactive way of life, etc. “Whatever are our genes, we can always lower risk of illnesses having changed a way of life ” - considers he.
