The cosmetics poison woman’s organism

June 30th, 2007

As a result of three-year research of a problem of the cosmetics use, British biochemist Richard Bens has come to a conclusions, that woman who daily uses cosmetics within one year gets up to 4,41 lbs of different chemical substances.
Cosmetic preparations, as it is known, have side-effects. They can cause skin irritation, presenilation and even oncological diseases. But, according to the statement of the British biochemist, the main danger is covered not in the quantity of chemicals, but in their compatibility.
The expert asserts that each piece of cosmetic preparations can be safe, however the effect of different substances combination is not known.
It appears that oral consumption of these chemicals can be less dangerous, than their rubbing in a skin.
Besides it, as a result of researches Professor Bens has found out, that nine of ten women use the expired cosmetics. And in fact it is known, that the expired cosmetic preparations can become nurseries of dangerous bacteria.
Special suspicion cause also some separate chemical substances - parabens which are used as preservatives in soap, shampoos, deodorants and children’s lotions. Their traces have been found in breast cancer tumors, though their participation in development of a cancer has not been proved.

The most dangerous for tourists countries of the world (Part 1)

June 27th, 2007

Thailand is the most dangerous country for people on leave. Such are the results of the research conducted by insurance company Norwich Union Travel Insurance on the basis of 60 thousand insured accident appeals in 2006.
Insurers have established that Thailand is that very country where tourists more often suffer from food poisonings, get in traffic accidents, and also lose the things. According to statistics, more than 17 thousand people annually perish in traffic accidents in this country basically because of motorcyclists, drunk drivers and speeding.
The countries of Caribbean basin are contraindicated for those who suffer from an allergy, especially kiss-type allergy. The set of various poisonous creeping and flying insects is found in this very region. Here was also fixed the greatest amount (more than three thousand) of cases of predatory sea inhabitants attacks.
Traveling across Southern Africa one can pick up malaria or any parasites penetrating into an organism at bathing in local sweet waters.
In safe Europe Austria stands out for the maximum quantity of traumas on mounting skiing resorts. But other European countries are sample of calmness and reliability. The most safe are Belgium, Holland, France and Germany. And the leader is Ireland.

Czechia which has recently entered the EU is also not so safe. Last two summer seasons tourist agencies are recommended to inform their tourists on danger of tick-borne encephalitis infection. Incidence rate last years is marked both among the local population, and visitors of the country. Especially it is actual in connection with opening of new forest tourist routes.
In Turkey, besides very high chances to get into a road incident, tourists should beware of another danger. The probability to pick up diarrhea, by various estimations, makes from 20 % up to 40 %.
In China tourists are exposed to serious risk, consuming badly or incorrectly prepared seafood. Infection of so-called “guanchzhousky round worms ” is quite possible here. It may happen if to consume raw seafood and exotic poultry. Special danger pose raw mollusks, some kinds of fishes, shrimps, crabs, frogs and snake. More often worms cause brain fever in the person resulting in dementia, sometimes – in a lethal outcome.
Russia is not less dangerous to tourists. Railway stations and the underground - places where the tourist can easily lose a purse, passport or camera. Transport traditionally does not come in time, therefore sometimes tourists are late for the plane. However there are no specific diseases.

Watch out - “natural” means for growing thin!

June 25th, 2007

Experts from Hong Kong have conducted research and found out, that some “natural” and “herbal” means for weight decrease contain non-authorized and non-studied components.
The question is about substances which are slightly changed or not changed analogues of forbidden medicines for growing thin. These components are not registered by manufacturers.
The article placed in last issue of the “Hong Kong Medical Magazine» tells about 42 patients who got in hospital from September, 2004 till December, 2006 as a result of taking “natural” products for growing thin.
«Chemical analogues of medicines are similar to different virus strains - they can be harmless, and can be fatal. If you buy a medicine of not clear origin in the Internet, it is very dangerous», - say Tony Mak, one of the authors of the research.
Official medicines prior to get on drugstores’ counters are studied for about 10 years while biological additives frequently are not exposed to any researches.
Authors of the work explain that manufacturers of bioadditives do not use full analogues of the forbidden or controllable chemical substances as it is legally punishable. However no herbs by itself can make the person svelte, therefore manufacturers change chemical structure of the substances which influence the weight.

For the first time the artificial liver has worked for 200 days

June 21st, 2007

The group of the Japanese scientists informed that created from membranes of hepatic tissues artificial liver worked more than 200 days in an organism of the mouse.
The group of scientists headed by the senior lecturer of the Tokyo female medical university Kadzuo Ohasi managed to cultivate in the special container a hepatic tissue of the laboratory mouse. From the received tissues experts created membranes 1,18 inches in diameter, and 0,0008 inches thick.
After the creation of membranes researchers grafted them under a skin on a back of the mouse and later established, that membranes of an artificial liver could function, developing protein named albumin and dissolving medicines.
Scientists mark, that this is the first case in the world practice when the artificial liver, grafted to an animal, worked for such a long time.
According to senior lecturer Ohasi, membranes of hepatic tissue can help with treatment of various hepatic diseases. Therefore his group will continue researches and will focus their work on applying this method on people.

Low-carbohydrate diets provoke development of colorectal cancer

June 21st, 2007

The group of microbiologists from Rowett Scientific research institute in Aberdeen (Scotland) has ascertained that Low-carbohydrate diets, such as Kremlin and Atkins diets, increase risk of colorectal cancer development.
Scientists studied during the research the influence of such diets on a level of short open-chain fatty acid butyrate - substance with anticarcinogenic activity which is generated in a large intestine by anaerobe bacteria.
Microbiologists have studied gut organisms of all participants of an experiment. It was found out, that people eating minimum quantity of carbohydrates had fourfold reduced level of anticancer intestinal bacteria. Low-carbohydrate diets mean consumption of proteins contained in meat, fish, poultry, cheeses. Such diets are hard for an organism and can lead to a number of side-effects.
Therefore, as declared the head of the group Harry Flint, low-calorie diets can become one of the factors provoking development of colorectal and rectum cancer.

Scientists found out a new dangerous microbe

June 20th, 2007

Scientists from the Californian University found out in the blood of the US citizen, who has recently come back from Peru, unknown microbe which is able to cause heavy and dangerous to life diseases.
As it became known, soon after returning home, the American has been hospitalized with high temperature, vomitting, diarrhea and strong headaches.
Physicians have decided to cope with an infection by means of usual antibiotics and managed to do this. They have assumed that the malaise of the American was caused by Bartonella bacilliformis - the Oroia fever pathogenic organism spread in some areas of Latin America.
But the scientists discovered that found in the blood of the patient bacterium was only close relative of Bartonella bacilliformis, however differed from it on a number of genetic characteristics. New, earlier unknown pathogenic organism received name Bartonella Rochalimae.
Most likely, its messengers also are blood-sucking insects. It is possible, that it is spread and causes periodic flashes of disease in the remote regions of Latin America, however local doctors can not distinguish it from Oroia fever.

Colgate tooth-paste contains poisonous substance

June 19th, 2007

Colgate tooth-paste was withdrawn from shops in four US states.
The consignment of the paste has been imported from South African Republic. Experts revealed harmful substances in its structure - including ethylene glycol.
This substance is used as solvent or a component of antifreezes. And it is unknown how it may have got in a tooth-paste. Experts have found out, that the paste sold everywhere in cheap shops the USA, has been delivered in the country from Southern Africa.
The company - manufacturer hastened to deny all charges in “desire to poison Americans”. Representatives of the company have given documents according to which Colgate tooth-paste has never been imported in the USA from Southern Africa. Besides experts have found out, that inscriptions on packing of a poisonous tooth-paste were made with mistakes. That is this product is a fake.
Colgate-Palmolive declares that has never used this substance for manufacture of the products.

Microbiologists created vaccine against cholera from genetically modified rice

June 18th, 2007

The Japanese microbiologists headed by Tomonori Nochi from university of Tokyo created vaccine against cholera from genetically modified rice. This vaccine have already been successfully tested on mice.
Microbiologists took a genetic material from Vibrio cholerae bacterium, and add it to DNA of rice of two kinds: normal (Kitaake) and dwarfish (Hosetsu).
Plants reacted to intervention and created toxins on the basis of which scientists made a powder, which, they dissolved in water and gave to mice.
As a result experts received a solution which became that vaccine against cholera which does not demand a syringe.
In this experiment rice have a number of advantages. First, the vaccine was made on the basis of an edible plant; therefore it is safe and inexpensive in manufacture. Second, rice is a basic element of food for many developing countries.

Israelis have developed a pill of illusory satiety

June 14th, 2007

Janiv Linda from the Jerusalem University has developed a preparation (and an original method of its synthesis) which gives the hungry person feeling of satiety and a full stomach.
The novelty is designated for as an auxiliary means for people passionately dreaming to grow thin, but constantly interested to have a bite.
Synthesized peptide chain is named BL-3020 perfectly passes through a wall of intestines and gets in blood. Then the given substance plies in bloodstream and, eventually, gets on receptors called MC4R in a brain.
Here BL-3020 simulates the action of hormone aMSH which is developed during the meal and which causes that very feeling of satiety.
During the experiments with mice scientists found out, that the only taking of BL-3020 leads to decrease in consumption of food during a day. After 12 days of daily taking of a preparation, experimental mice weighed 40 % less, than “control” mice of the same age.
Peptide is patented in Europe and the USA, and now Israeli company Bioline RX which has received the technology from university, is engaged in commercialization of the given project.
