Microbiologists created vaccine against cholera from genetically modified rice

June 18th, 2007

The Japanese microbiologists headed by Tomonori Nochi from university of Tokyo created vaccine against cholera from genetically modified rice. This vaccine have already been successfully tested on mice.
Microbiologists took a genetic material from Vibrio cholerae bacterium, and add it to DNA of rice of two kinds: normal (Kitaake) and dwarfish (Hosetsu).
Plants reacted to intervention and created toxins on the basis of which scientists made a powder, which, they dissolved in water and gave to mice.
As a result experts received a solution which became that vaccine against cholera which does not demand a syringe.
In this experiment rice have a number of advantages. First, the vaccine was made on the basis of an edible plant; therefore it is safe and inexpensive in manufacture. Second, rice is a basic element of food for many developing countries.

Spanish surgeon replaced the right hand of the patient by the left

June 7th, 2007

For the first time in the world well-known Spanish surgeon Pedro Kavadas has made a unique operation - he managed to transform the right hand of the patient which was paralyzed, into the left one.
Operation was carried out on April, 29 in the city of Valencia where this prominent surgeon works. During the operation surgeon changed the position of the big finger of the right hand, and then implanted the right hand in stump of the left hand that actually transformed the right upper extremity of the man into left one.
The doctor informed, that his patient had lost the left hand 40 years ago, and three years ago he underwent cerebral haemorrhage which paralyzed all right side of his body.
Operation was made successfully and the patient can soon leave the hospital. Now he should strenuously develop and train his new hand.

Russian scientists finished creation of HIV vaccine

May 31st, 2007

On May, 29 director of the St.-Petersburg Biomedical center professor Andrey Kozlov participating in the 16-th international conference AIDS, Cancer and Public health informed, that the work on creation of the Russian HIV vaccine have turned the corner of clinical tests.
Scientists from Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Novosibirsk managed to develop antidote against virulent infection by a method of genetic engineering. Kozlov informed that in Saint Petersburg with the assistance of large American university centers and the USA National institute of health is created the necessary structure for clinical tests of vaccine.
This structure has everything necessary for tests: genic-virologic laboratories, capacities for production of necessary quantities of test samples of a preparation, and volunteers from risk groups.
However Professor Kozlov has noted that it is too early to talk about an unconditional victory over AIDS. In his opinion, development of effective means of struggle against this disease can take not one year.
As to the state financing of the further works, discussion of this question will begin this June.

Americans created special water which will become medicine

May 28th, 2007

Experts of the American company have created the superoxidized water which should replace medical products of healing, disinfectant and restoring action.
Development belongs to Oculus company. A key element of special water is a component named Microcin, which represents lattices from oxychloride ions - the charged molecules, which block a number of microbes.
New development is effective at the preventive of diabetes, an ulcer and thrombus. Also new water kills only alien micro-bodies and sick cells, and healthy cells are interconnected, therefore this method is harmless for them.
Experts of the company comment, that usual water also contains ions, hypochlorites and other elements, however their contents in it is not enough.
Now experts assure that the superoxidized water is able to kill 10 kinds of bacteria which are on one ot the other way connected to various diseases.
The company plans to present its invention at the International biomedical conference in Monte Carlo.

Selenium can help in the struggle against HIV

May 11th, 2007

Scientists assume that the chemical element selenium has positive effect on the organism of HIV positive patients.
Conclusion about the positive influence of selenium on the organism of HIV positive patients made scientists from the Miami University. During the experiment 91 HIV positive patients daily took medicines with the high content of selenium. Another 83 patients took placebo. In the beginning of the experiment selenium level in an organism of all participants of the experiment was identical.
After nine months of taking medicine medical examination has shown that the group, where patients had been taking selenium, has lower risk of virus activity, than the other one. This promising research forces to assume, that selenium medicines should be combined with the traditional therapy.
The researchers stated that selenium can be simple, inexpensive and safe addition to common HIV treatment. The mechanism of selenium influence on an organism is unknown thoroughly. According to one of the hypotheses, selenium has antioxidant properties and is able to restore the damaged cells of the immune system.

Appendix will be extracted through a mouth.

May 7th, 2007

Within last two weeks three groups of researchers from France and the USA have declared successful tests of a new surgical technique, which allows getting access to internals through natural apertures on a body of the patient.
Endoscopic appliance is entered through a mouth, or through a vagina, and then penetrates into an abdominal cavity through a small puncture in walls of these bodies. The removed tissues, and also samples of tissues for the analysis are taken outside the same way.
Ohio University Medical Center experts have carried out ten biopsies through a mouth. Simultaneously two similar operations have been successfully carried out in New York and Strasbourg (France).
According to the researchers, these surgeries are first experiences in territory of Europe and the USA. At the same time the Indian surgeons declare, that they extract appendix through a mouth for a long time.
The new surgical technique named natural orifice translumenal endosurgery, NOTES, is a natural development of laparoscopic surgeries, however, it does not demand even small cuts on a body of the patient.
Absence of scars on a body and the short recovery period are NOTES` main advantages.
One more advantage - small risk of infectious complications which frequently arise after common surgeries.
Possible NOTES` negative consequences - internal hemorrhage and also the postoperative pains.

The foetus of a pregnant women under the control of a new pocket device

May 4th, 2007

British scientists have created a pocket device for the control of a foetus` heartbeat. This device will help pregnant women to control the work of child’s heart and in case of any deviations to call for medical aid.
15-years cooperation of engineers and doctors from Nottingham University resulted in development of a simple device in size of a mobile phone which can be used by the pregnant woman out of the medical institution and which does not demand doctor’s interference. Such high-sensitive device calculates heartbeat frequency in real time. Then the received data are transferred with the help of wireless technology to the nearest computer or handheld computer.
Safety of the device has already been confirmed by the existing European Community standards. As informed one of the leading researchers Barry Hiens-Gill, clinical tests of the device is planned to be finished by July, 2007, and in his opinion, already this October new device will appear on sale.

Japanese have cloned an eye

March 21st, 2007

The Japanese scientists managed to create a human eye from the stem cell taken from edge of a cornea which carries out regenerative function.
As informs the New Region, the stem cell has been placed in a nutrient medium. After a week it has developed into a group of cells, and on the fourth week had transformed into a cornea in two centimeters diameter. In such a way was also created thin protective layer which covers the cornea from outside, informs http://e-news.com.ua.
As a nutrient medium the Japanese scientists used artificial chemical compounds, instead of traditional mouse cells or the veal whey. Thus, the new way of transplantation eliminates risk of infections from animals.
As soon as safety of new technology will be proved, the Japanese scientists will start clinical tests.
