Every six seconds tobacco takes a human life

February 13th, 2008

World Health Organization has published the annual report which says, that the illnesses connected to smoking, take a life of one person every six seconds, killing on the average 5,4 million people a year.

Authors of the report inform that the number of tobacco epidemic victims exceeds death-roll of any infectious disease, therefore unless decisive measures, this figure by 2030 will grow up to eight millions deaths.

“And in 21st century from tobacco can die almost 1 billion people, who have not managed to overcome the weakness for cigarettes, snuffy, hookahs, cigars and tobacco-pipes”, - is said in the report.

WHA has informed that none of the country in the world has completely fulfilled requirements of the International tobacco control convention, which obliges participants to forbid advertising of tobacco products, rise in the price and taxes for their manufacture and sale and forbid smoking in public places for the sake of non-smokers.

Life expectancy depends on stature

December 14th, 2007

British scientists from the Cambridge University headed by Andrea Migliano have conducted research which has shown, that small stature of pygmies (61 inches) was not the result of adaptation to life in woods, but the reason of very high death rate.

Until recently scientists believed that short height of pygmies helped them not only to adapt to life in jungles, but also promoted survival in starving time, as small sizes of a body demanded less meal.

But as it appeared the true reason of short height of pygmies and some other dwarf tribes - very high death rate.

In the first years of life physical development of pygmies’ children is approximately habitual to ours, but by 12 years the increase in height stops, that leads to an early puberty.

According to researchers, it is an evolutionary advantage of stop of growth. Life expectancy of representatives of these peoples is so small, that later puberty would lead to extinction of tribes.

Europe grows old: there are more elderly people, than children

October 10th, 2007

In EU member-states there are more elderly people, than children, informed European statistical agency Eurostat.

According to the publish by the agency data, in structure of the EU population children under 14 make only 16,2 %, and elderly people in the age of 65 years and more - 16,6 %.

For the last 25 years total number of young people in the EU member-states has reduced by 23 million (21 %, 10 % from which - only for during last decade).

According to the Eurostat information, the most “old” population among the EU countries has Italy where each fifth resident is more than 65 years old, and the part of young people makes only 14,2 %.

Ireland has the youngest population, its part there makes 20,7 %. Despite these parameters, an aggregate number of the population in the EU, which is almost 500 million people today, for the last 27 years has increased by 8,2 %.

Eurostat explains it, first of all, by an increase in population due to inflow of immigrants. Only the last year natives of the third countries have provided 75 % of demographic growth in the EU.

Shortage of sleep influences reduction of life time

October 5th, 2007

People who sleep five or less hours per day, live less than those who sleep seven hours, assert the British scientists. Surplus of sleep is not less harmful: people spending in a bed eight and more hours, die earlier.

Scientists from Worweek University and the London Imperial College used the data on the durations of sleep of 10308 state civil employees gethered in 1985-1988, and updated in 1992-1993. Supervision over participants was kept within 17 years.

Having analyzed the available data for the specified period, researchers have found out, that people, who slept for five and less hours in a day, 2 times more often died from cardiovascular diseases. As a whole, the death rate in this group was 1,7 times higher, than in a group of the employees sleeping for seven hours a day.

Want of sleep was associated with the increased risk of putting on weight, hypertension and diabetes of the 2 type, informed one of the authors of the research Francesco Kappuchio.

At the same time scientists have paid attention, that among those who slept for eight and more hours, the death rate was also twice higher, than among people, sleeping for seven hours a day.

Researchers could not explain this dependence, however have assumed, that long sleep can be a sign of depression, or breakdown typical for oncological diseases.

Scientists have described the future of the one human race

August 28th, 2007

Genetics and anthropologists have put forward a number of hypotheses, according to which people of the future will evolve in one race of the beautiful swarthy giants who have lost social skills, because of technical progress.
National Geographic has written the assumption that all red-haired people will disappear on the Earth by 2060.
According to scientists-geneticist, now only 2 % of the Earth’s population have a gene responsible for red color of hair. Thus as a result of outmarriages there is a quick reduction of number of its carriers. Red color of hair has appeared in Northern Europe about thousand years ago over the mutation of a special gene. Scientists consider that the reason of such mutation was an attempt of a body to provide vitamin D synthesis in conditions of sunny days’ lack.
It is interesting that in opinion of scientists, in the nearest 100 thousand years the mankind can be divided into two subspecies (by a social principle). “Elite” descendants will be high, slim, healthy, beautiful and creative. People of the “lowest” class will turn in the stupid, ugly, stocky creatures like goblins. These two classes will differ sharply from each other.
Also there is an assumption, that in the nearest one thousand years people can turn to swarthy giants from 70 inches up to 83 inches. And life interval will increase to120 years.

In 2025 EU will face the demographic crisis

May 14th, 2007

The European Institute of a family policy predicts demographic crisis in the European Union in 2025, and calls authorities and governments of the member-countries to follow a policy, stimulating an increase of natality.
“Europe faces the reduction of natality, and from 2025 on the European Union will face negative demographic dynamicsâ€?, - as it is stated in the report of the head of the Institute Eduardo Heartfelder.
According to the experts, during 1994-2006 the natural increase of the population was 19 million persons in EU. At the same time the given demographic parameter was by 80 % provided by the immigrants.
The head of the European Institute of a family policy supposes that the increasing demographic crisis is caused by a number of socio-economic factors. In particular, the amount of abortions in Europe has increased by 30 % during the last decade: absolute leaders are Belgium and Spain where the amount of such operations has increased by 50 % during the same period.
Heartfelder has noted also the growth of divorces among Europeans: according to the statistics, on the average one divorce accounts for two marriages. The population of 27 countries of the EU is about 500 million.

The population of a planet grows old and will continue to grow old

April 16th, 2007

The population of the Earth grows old, and this tendency will be kept for decades. Such conclusion contains the report of the United Nations Secretary General.
The document states that the population of all the countries, irrespective of development level, in forthcoming decades, will grow old. Report marked that in 2050 in the developed countries one child will account for two elderly persons on the average.
In 2007 28 % from 6,6 billion people living on the Earth, children will make, 18 % - youth, 44 % able-bodied citizens and 10 % - older persons.
In the developed states, as it is spoken in the report, the structure of the population differs considerably from average world parameters. In these countries older persons will make 21 %, and children - 17 %.
End of March 2006 the United Nations has announced its demographic report on Ukraine. According to that report Ukraine had the lowest natality in the world.
Till 2050 the number of old aged people in Ukraine will reach 40 % of the population.
