Scientists: hair-dye can cause cancer

August 8th, 2007

American scientists have conducted research and found out that men and women, who constantly dyed hair till 1980, are exposed to the greater risk to be ill of leucosis, than those who did not do it.
The head of the researches Gurth Roshe informed that the hair-dye for a long time has been in the list of potentially dangerous carcinogenic substances and numerous researches of its structure constantly gave inconsistent results.
But this time they have managed to establish, that dangerous are only old formulas of dyes, which contain carcinogenic components. And dyes created after 1980 are quite safe for the health.
During the research experts compared 769 patients with acute leukemia and 623 healthy persons. In result scientists found out that those who dyed hair from one to five times during 15 years had twice higher risk of leucosis development, than those from the control group.
Scientists mark, that though use of out-of-date dyes is dangerous to health, this is not obligatory factor of leucosis development. Therefore there is no need to refuse opportunity to change the image.

Alcohol increases colorectal cancer risk by 10 %

August 1st, 2007

The British scientists after the conducted research have declared that people who drink half-liter of beer or the big glass of wine daily have 10 % higher risk of colorectal cancer.
The research headed by Professor Tim Key, deputy head of the cancer epidemiological research group in the Oxford University, has summarized the data of almost 480 thousand people.
Scientists have found out quantity of alcohol and frequency of drinking within the last six years. It was discovered that people, who used more than 30 g of alcohol daily that corresponds to liter of a strong beer, raise risk of disease approximately by 25 %.
Doctor Lesley Walker from Cancer Research UK considers what now its is difficult to determine safe for health quantity of alcohol, as there are a set of different brands of strong beer and wine.

Sausages and hamburgers can cause cancer because of the dye

July 12th, 2007

The widespread food dye which is added in sausages and hamburgers, can lead to a cancer. About it informed the European agency on food safety.
The headquarters of the Agency is located in the Italian city of Parma. There they informed the name of the dye: Red 2G, on grocery packings it is marked as E 128.
The tests on animals have shown, that Red 2G in an organism transforms to aniline. This substance can cause cancer in animals and the person, and also to generate genetic changes in cells of an organism.
The scientific council of the European agency on food safety cancelled existing till now norms, which determined safe Red 2G’s concentration in food stuffs. At that the Agency has refrained from an appeal to ban completely this substance in the food-processing industry.
The agency has acquainted the European Commission with the conclusions. According to experts, the question on Red 2G ban will be solved by Eurocommission and by the national governments of the countries.

Spirit destroys metastasises

July 6th, 2007

Transdermal introduction of ethyl alcohol in metastases thyroid gland cancer in bone tissue can be used as the additional therapeutic procedure promoting the reduction of tumor size and painful syndrome relieve.
Thyroid gland cancer is rather widespread malignant disease. Usually tumors are removed in the surgical way and then hormonal therapy is carried out.
The forecast of cancer treatment is usually enough favorable; however metastases in bone tissue are not always possible to remove in the surgical way, besides they are frequently resistant to radioactive iodine treatment.
The Japanese researchers from university of Hokkaido, headed by Professor Kunihiro Nakada, have suggested to use in such cases as additional therapy introduction of pure ethanol, which induces cells. Authors consider, that introduction of ethanol in a tumor leads to selective destruction of a tumorous tissue.
Nakada says that to introduce the method in clinical practice it is necessary to optimize, including determining of an optimum dosage of ethanol and amount of injections.

Low-carbohydrate diets provoke development of colorectal cancer

June 21st, 2007

The group of microbiologists from Rowett Scientific research institute in Aberdeen (Scotland) has ascertained that Low-carbohydrate diets, such as Kremlin and Atkins diets, increase risk of colorectal cancer development.
Scientists studied during the research the influence of such diets on a level of short open-chain fatty acid butyrate - substance with anticarcinogenic activity which is generated in a large intestine by anaerobe bacteria.
Microbiologists have studied gut organisms of all participants of an experiment. It was found out, that people eating minimum quantity of carbohydrates had fourfold reduced level of anticancer intestinal bacteria. Low-carbohydrate diets mean consumption of proteins contained in meat, fish, poultry, cheeses. Such diets are hard for an organism and can lead to a number of side-effects.
Therefore, as declared the head of the group Harry Flint, low-calorie diets can become one of the factors provoking development of colorectal and rectum cancer.

Computer tomography can cause cancer

May 23rd, 2007

Computer tomography treatment can lead to development of cancer diseases at patients.
The American roentgenologists warn that the patients, who undergo physical examination with use of a computer tomograph, hoping to find out a cancer tumor at an early stage, run the risk to earn a cancer as a result of examination.
According to the experts, using a computer tomography of all body, the patient receives the same doze of an irradiation that was received by the people who were in two and a half kilometers from epicenters of nuclear explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The doze of the radiation during the full examination on a computer tomography 100 times exceeds a doze received, for example, during mammography - radiological examination of mammary glands.

The sun-protection cream “does not protect from cancer”

May 17th, 2007

Sun-protection creams do not give a sufficient degree of skin protection and only dense fabrics, such as woolen and jeans, can rescue from cancer and other dangerous consequences of ultra-violet radiation, stated the Swiss scientists.
Scientists from Triemli hospital in Zurich have compared about 500 various researches of different skin protection means in an article on a website of the British medical magazine Lancet. They came to a conclusion, that the most inefficient of them is sun-protection cream. The cream can protect from solar burns and easy forms of skin cancer, but it does not rescue from most dangerous of them, such as melanoma.
Light linen and cotton fabrics also do not always cover sufficiently, and if they are light or damp, they can even lower a degree of protection. Basing on the results of the research scientists recommend fitting clothes from dense fabrics, for example jeans or woolen, wide-brimmed hats, - and if possible do not go out in the sun at all.
In their article scientists recognize, what not everyone will be ready to follow their recommendations.
“People shouldn’t misuse sun-protection creams trying to increase time of being in the sun “, - warn they.
Cancer Research UK recommends to stay in a shadow during the hottest time - from 11 o’clock in the morning up to 3 one o’clock in the afternoon, to wear sports shirt, a hat and solar glasses and to use at least SPF 15 cream.

Safe cancer medicine is found in berries

April 30th, 2007

Wood berries, vegetables, fruit and red wine contain a substance, which can destroy cancer cells without damage to healthy blood cells.
To opinion of University of Pittsburg Medical School scientists, this chemical compound can underlie new, less toxic preparations for treatment of some leucosis and lymphoma forms.
In their research scientists have used one of the most widespread varieties of anthocyanidins antioxidants - cyanidin-3-rutinoside (C-3-R), received from a blackberry.
As it was found out, small C-3-R concentration influence within 18 hours ruined 50 % of a leucosis cells colony. The increase in concentration of an antioxidant caused destruction of all malignant cells. Cellular lines of other leucosis and lymphoma forms reacted the same way.
According to one of the research authors, doctor Sao-Min In, C-3-R presence in products of a natural origin allows to figure on safety of this substance even in big concentration. Thus it gives the hope of creating new less toxic in comparison with the modern means of chemotherapy.
In the nearest future researchers are going to test anticancer cyanidin-3-rutinoside properties on animals.
The research report is published in Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Aspirin reduces cancer death rate

April 25th, 2007

According to the large research which has been carried out in the USA, regular aspirin taking reduces cancer risk and the death rate connected to the oncological reasons, in particular it concerns former smokers and those who have never smoked. Only aspirin has this effect, and it is not extended on the other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, (NSAID).
«Most likely, aspirin has anticarcinogenic properties, but it has side effects, as well, for example, it can provoke a gastric bleeding. Before starting to take aspirin, it is necessary to consult to the doctor», - warns the author of the work Aditya Bardia (clinic Mayo, Rochester, the USA).
Researcher used the data on 22507 women. Study lasted for 12 years, during this time 3487 women suffered cancer, 1193 from them have died for this reason. Regular aspirin taking reduced risk of cancer by 16 % and lowered risk of death from oncological disease by13 %.
Aspirin also reduces risk of death from cardiovascular diseases and the general death rate.
Aditya Bardia has named the received data intriguing, as they are evidence that «regular taking of aspirin can play the important role in prevention of chronic diseases most spread in the western countries, that is a cancer and heart ischemic illness».

Efficacious lung cancer remedy was found in marihuana

April 24th, 2007

The active component of marihuana slows down growth of malignant lungs tumors and reduces risk of metastasises. Harvard University employees managed to establish, that psychotropic drug suppresses growth and spread of the most dangerous cancer cells.
Scientists managed to show, that addition of this drug substance slows down growth of cellular colonies and reduces mobility of cells.
After that scientists have carried out additional experiments on mice with malignant lungs tumors. Experiment showed that cancer tumors were on the average by 50 % less on volume and weight, than at mice from the control group. The mechanism of the salutary action of marihuana active component remains unknown. However, scientists recognize that antineoplastic properties of the drug remain insufficiently studied and demand further confirmation. They noted also, that some of the previous researches on animals have shown, that marihuana can promote development of some cancer types.
