Artificial ‘cells’ boost the immune response to cancer

March 7th, 2008

Biomedical engineers from Yale University have created artificial cells, which can considerably increase production of T-lymphocytes, responsible for immune response. Their application allows to stimulate an organism of the patient to struggle against cancer, and also certain infectious diseases, informs magazine Molecular Therapy.

Artificial cells have been created by Tarek Fahmy and Erin Steenblock. These cells were made from a substance of natural origin, which is used in manufacture of absorbable suture material and approved by FDA.

Use of artificial cells allows to simulate natural process of proliferation and stimulations of T-lymphocytes, in particular cytotoxic T-lymphocytes, vital in destruction of cancer cells. However this process accelerates and proceeds more effectively, has noted Fahmy.

Hepatitis C infection may be combated with grapefruit compound

February 18th, 2008

Grapefruit compound, which gives grapefruit bitterish taste, slows down extension of hepatitis C infection in an organism, have established American scientists. In their opinion, the combination of this substance with traditional viricides can relieve disease and prevent chronic form of the disease, informs magazine Hepatology.

According to the head of the research Raymond Chung and his colleagues from Massachusetts hospitals, the main role belongs to nagenginin. Their experiments have shown that action of this derivative substance reduces production of the virus from infected cells by 80 %. It is also important, that medical concentration of this substance is not toxic for an organism, has noted Chung.

According to the statistics, more than 3 % of the planet’s population is infected with hepatitis C, and in overwhelming majority of cases illness passes to the chronic form. The chronic hepatitis C infection can lead to cirrhosis and liver carcinoma.

Smoking marihuana leads to loss of teeth

February 11th, 2008

Experts from stomatologic school Danedin in New Zealand have proved that often smoking marihuana three times increases risk of periodontitis.
In the research participated 900 young people, who were observed from 18 till 32 years. Scientists have also compared reports on drugs consumption by participants in the age of 18, 21, 26 and 32 years.

“Gum illnesses have been found at a quarter of people, who regularly used marihuana from 18 till 32 years - we have been struck with such significant increase in risk”, - declared head of the research Murray Thomson.

Periodontitis is a disease which leads to tooth destruction. 100 % of adult population of the Earth and 80 % of children have these or that signs of the disease, assert experts of the WHA.

It is necessary to note, that earlier American scientists came to a conclusion that CBD in marihuana structure, prevents cancer.

Broccoli protects from heart illnesses

February 4th, 2008

Steam-cooked broccoli improves heart work and reduces damages of myocardium in conditions of oxygen lack. To such conclusion came American scientists as a result of experiments on rats, informs Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

In researchers’ opinion, the protective effect of broccoli is explained by high content of some substances, which stimulate thioredoxin’s production. This albumin plays an important role in protection of cells in conditions of broken blood supply of heart muscle.

Protective action of broccoli is not limited to prevention of heart illnesses. Earlier researches have shown that this cabbage reduces probability of breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Gene therapy to treat chronic pain

January 25th, 2008

American scientists have suggested using of gene therapy for struggle against chronic pain. Developed by them method is deprived of adverse effects, typical for opiates, and renders long-term anesthetizing effect in experiments on animals, informs Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Now for struggle against chronic pain doctors apply narcotic analgesics – morphine’s analogues. These preparations have such side-effects as constant drowsiness, dormancy and hallucination that forces some patients to refuse taking of them.

Scientists from Medical school Mount Sinai (New York) have developed a technique, which simulates anesthetizing effect of opiates, but renders more directive effect.

Head of the research Andreas Beutler informed, that in the future the directed gene therapy can become an alternative to existing methods of struggle against a strong chronic pain, for example, at patients with the extensive cancer stages.

Tea and coffee-lovers develop cancer less often

January 7th, 2008

American scientists from Medical school of Harvard University, having studied the data of 13 researches, came to a conclusion that people who drink a lot of coffee and tea, less often develop kidney cancer.

According to the data of the research, those who daily drank on the average three and more cups of coffee (240 milliliters), had 16 % less chances of kidney cancer in comparison with those, who drank coffee once a day or less often.

Also experts have found out, that the daily use of one cup of tea has been connected to 15-percent decrease in risk of cancer development, while milk, soft drinks and juices did not influence frequency of diseases.

That is interesting, beneficial influence of tea and coffee remained the same even taking into account such cancer risk factors as smoking, adiposity and increased blood pressure.

American scientists believe that anticancer properties of tea and coffee can be connected to ability of these drinks to raise sensitivity of organism’s tissues to insulin. It is known that increased levels of this hormone in an organism are considered as one of risk factors of many cancer diseases.

An allergy reduces possibility of cancer

December 26th, 2007

Canadian scientific from hospital Mount Sinai(Ontario) have conducted some researches and found out, that excessive immune system activity doesn’t only provoke allergic diseases, but also prevent from pancreas cancer.
Scientists have conducted an experiment in which participated 654 persons with pancreas cancer and the same amount of healthy people.

Having studied medical patients’ histories scientists found out that people, suffering from allergies, fell ill with pancreas cancer 57 % less often than those who have never suffered from an allergy.

It is necessary to note, that the data of a new research enable scientists to study interrelation between allergies and some oncological diseases. In fact the reasons of such interrelation are unknown till now.

Pancreas cancer takes one of the first places among the reasons of mortality from oncological diseases. Only in the USA it is annually diagnosed about 30 thousand new cases of the disease and only 5 % of the patients can live more than 5 years after diagnosing.

Scientists created the microchip for cancer cells determination

December 25th, 2007

The group of the American scientists has managed to create a microchip, which can determine in blood the smallest fragments which have come off a primary cancer tumor and have got in a bloodstream (circulating malignant cells).
The novelty is a silicon chip as a plastic card in size with antibodies on its surface. These antibodies can determine protein contained in the majority of cancer tumors.

During the movement of blood along the chip, its surface draws malignant cells like glue. Therefore the microchip can find out one thousand malignant cells in 60 billion blood cells.

The new device has already been tested on blood samples of 68 patients with metastases from cancer of lung, prostate, breast, pancreas and large intestine. And, as scientists declare, they have managed to find out circulating malignant cells in 115 of 116 tested samples.

It is necessary to note, that circulating malignant cells in blood can lead to development of metastases outside the sick organ. These particles are fragile and rare, and are badly determined with the help of existing methods. Therefore scientists believe that the new technology can be used for diagnostics of cancer diseases, and also for the control of treatment’s efficiency.

Scientists: neat figure rescues from cancer

December 19th, 2007

Group of experts within the framework of the international project has conducted some researches and found out hat even those people who do not suffer from excess weights, should aspire to grow thin, if they want to lower danger of cancer.

The World Fund of Cancer Researches has conducted the most serious analysis concerning connection of way of life and development of cancer diseases. They have studied data of 7 thousand researches, conducted for the last five years.

It was found out that it is very useful for adult not to put on weight, to avoid alcoholic drinks and those which contain sugar. Also experts recommend not to eat bacon or ham. Besides, everyone should aspire to be maximum slim.

Rectal cancer and breast cancer are included into the number of the most widespread diseases for today.

Sweet teeth run the risk of cancer and sterility

November 28th, 2007

The use of large quantities of fructose and glucose influences the genes regulating level of active testosterone and an estrogen in an organism of the person, has shown the new research.

Fructose and glucose are processed by liver. When dietary intake contains too much sugar, liver transforms it into lipids. Scientists have found out that large quantity of lipids reduces secretion of albumen SHBG (the globulin connecting sex hormones). Globulin plays the major role, supervising the quantity of testosterone and estrogen in blood, informs ScienceDaily.

If the organism starts to produce smaller quantity of SHBG, the content of sex hormones sharply increases that entails pustule, sterility, polycystic ovary and uterine carcinoma. Change of a level of SHBG’s level also leads to imbalance of testosterone and estrogen that provokes development of cardiovascular diseases.

As a rule, doctors measure SHBG content in blood to reveal hormonal disorders. Besides it helps to determine risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
