Canadian surgeons found out green blood

June 13th, 2007

During a common operation surgeons of Vancouver city have faced rather strange phenomenon: the patient had very strange color of blood. Instead of common red one, doctors have seen a liquid of dark green color.
The 42-years confirmed smoker, whose name remained unknown, had problems with blood circulation in a leg and in this connection had to be operated.
“During the operation blood appeared to be not red, but dark green, almost black, reminding the color of an avocado peel. We have been very much amazed”, - told the surgeon.
Strange liquid was immediately sent on the analysis which revealed sulfohemoglobinemia - a condition caused by connection of sulfur atom to hemoglobin which is a carrier of oxygen in red blood cells - erythrocytes. Chemical reaction has changed the structure of hemoglobin therefore the color of blood has changed also.
It appeared that the patient took too much preparation called Sumatriptan, headache-lowering drug. The reactant of this preparation could become a source of sulfur in blood of the Canadian.
However despite of strange chemical reaction in the organism, the patient has perfectly underwent an operation and quickly recovered. The patient stopped to take the medicine, and some weeks later his blood again found natural color.
